  • bondage
  • discipline
  • dominance/submission
  • sadomasochism

Are you interested in any of these? Or do you already incorporate some aspects of BDSM into your sexual life without labeling yourself such? No matter what you are practicing now, there are always more options to explore! You may not even know it, but you could be craving some BDSM action in your bedroom. Until you try it, you cannot say that you don’t like it.

Today, people are interested in exploring their sexuality; BDSM has become a popular (even mainstream topic) after 50 Shades of Gray.

P.S. This kink quiz can cover that.

Not to say that people find it comfortable to discuss their sexual preferences with everybody, but they no longer can form their desires. A few decades ago, such movies would be considered taboo and watched only in a dark room while nobody else is there. Today, we get to see such a portrayal on big screens in cinemas. Sexy freedoms have gone a long way in the 2000s.

Medical

Unfortunately, in the past, BDSM preferences and practices were considered a disorder. Thusly, they were defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases. As a disorder, it was shameful to feel this way. A disorder status put a substantial stigma on the practice.

Fortunately, many modern organizations have worked hard on removing such clinical status. As a result, today, BDSM has not considered a disorder when it is only a part of your consensual sexual experience. If certain BDSM elements become “the most important source of stimulation or sexual gratification,” and your desires bring harm to any participant, they can result in a diagnosed disorder. Mild degrees of introducing BDSM elements in bed are considered perfectly healthy and “normal.”

Gender

The connection of gender to BDSM preference plays an essential role in the studies of the practice. As it turns out, the stereotypes are generally supported by survey results. According to several studies, approximately 10% of surveyed women report the preference of the dom role, while around 70-80% on an average report being submissive. The least distinction ever uncovered by the reports 62% of surveyed women being submissive.

On the contrary, men are more likely to prefer a dominant role or being switches (the ability to switch between the two and enjoying both roles).

Another interesting BDSM study found the notion that women are more likely to be masochistic. The stereotype was never proven scientifically and empirically, though.

There are still lots of misconceptions about BDSM that have to be studied and surveyed. And while you are browsing on that fascinating BDSM research, this BDSM test will unveil your own preferences!
